How to Blocking Knits (Knitting)
Blocking is the finishing step that relaxes and sets knit fabric into its true resting shape and size — evening out stitch tension, opening up lace and cables, and squaring a piece's edges — using moisture (water or steam) to let fibres relax and settle rather than trying to force a shape through pinning alone. A piece straight off the needles rarely looks or measures like its final, blocked self, which is exactly why gauge swatches need to be blocked too, not just the finished project.
The three common methods
Wet blocking — fully submerging the piece in room-temperature water, gently squeezing out excess (never wringing or twisting), then laying it flat, pinned to target dimensions, until fully dry — is the most thorough method and the one that opens lace and evens stitches most effectively, because the fibre is genuinely saturated and has maximum opportunity to relax.
Steam blocking — pinning the piece to shape dry, then hovering a steam iron just above the fabric (not touching it directly) to introduce moisture through steam rather than full submersion — is faster and doesn't require the piece to fully dry before handling again, but generally produces a less thorough relaxation than full wet blocking, since the fibre absorbs less moisture overall.
Spray blocking — pinning the piece dry, then misting it with water from a spray bottle until damp throughout — sits between the two, offering more control over moisture level than full submersion while still getting real moisture into the fibre, a common choice for a piece too delicate or too large to comfortably submerge and handle wet.
Which fibres actually respond
Animal fibres (wool, alpaca, mohair) respond dramatically to blocking — their fibre structure genuinely relaxes and re-sets with moisture, which is why a wool lace shawl can look unremarkable off the needles and transform completely once blocked. Plant fibres (cotton, linen) respond much less; they don't have wool's elastic memory to relax, so blocking mostly evens tension and sets dimensions rather than dramatically opening a stitch pattern. Acrylic and other synthetics respond least of all to wet or steam blocking specifically, since the fibre itself doesn't absorb and release moisture the way natural fibres do — acrylic instead needs heat-set blocking (see below) to hold a shape at all.
Acrylic needs a different approach entirely
Because acrylic doesn't respond meaningfully to plain water, "blocking" acrylic in the wool sense mostly evens out stitches temporarily rather than resetting the fibre — the piece tends to relax back toward its original shape once dry, unlike wool's more lasting set. A careful, brief application of steam (heat, not just moisture) can heat-set acrylic more permanently, but this carries real risk of overheating and permanently flattening or melting the fibre if done carelessly — test on a swatch first, and never press an iron directly onto acrylic fabric.
Why blocking changes gauge, and why that matters before trusting a measurement
An unblocked swatch or piece frequently measures differently — sometimes noticeably so — than the same fabric after blocking, because blocking relaxes tension unevenly built up during knitting and can stretch or settle stitches to a different resting size. This is exactly why a gauge swatch needs to be blocked the same way the finished project will eventually be blocked before you measure and compare it against a pattern's stated gauge — an unblocked swatch's raw measurement can mislead you into the wrong needle size for your actual finished, blocked fabric.
Where it goes wrong
A piece that shrinks or grows unexpectedly after blocking. Different fibres and even different yarns within the same fibre category can shrink or grow differently when wet — always test blocking behavior on a swatch of the actual yarn before committing a full project's measurements to an assumption based on a different yarn's past behavior.
Colors bleeding or running during wet blocking. More common with hand-dyed or deeply saturated colors, especially on a first wash — a colorfastness test (dab a damp white cloth on a hidden area) before fully submerging a finished piece catches this before it ruins the project, and a cool-water soak with a small amount of vinegar is a common preventive step for wool specifically.
Pins leaving marks or the piece drying with visible pin-point distortions. Using enough pins, spaced closely enough, and blocking wires for straight edges (rather than relying on widely spaced pins alone) produces straighter, less scalloped edges, particularly for a piece with a long straight border like a blanket or shawl edge.
