Almost nobody swatches at exactly the gauge a pattern was written at. This calculator takes a stitch or row count straight from a pattern, the pattern's stated gauge, and your own measured gauge, and returns the equivalent count at your gauge — so you can follow the shaping instructions as written without doing the ratio math yourself, row by row, for an entire garment.

What it actually solves

A pattern's stitch and row counts are only meaningful at the gauge they were written for. If a sweater pattern says "cast on 200 stitches" at 5 stitches per inch, that number encodes a specific finished width (40 inches) — not "200 stitches" as an independent fact. Swatch at 4.5 stitches per inch instead, and casting on the pattern's literal 200 stitches would produce a garment roughly 44 inches around, not 40. The calculator solves the opposite direction of that problem: given the pattern's count and both gauges, it returns the stitch count that reproduces the pattern's intended finished measurement at your gauge.

The math

For a stitch count: your count = pattern count × (your stitches-per-inch ÷ pattern's stitches-per-inch), rounded to the nearest whole stitch. Row counts use the identical ratio with rows-per-inch in place of stitches-per-inch — the two are calculated independently because, as covered on the gauge reference page, stitch gauge and row gauge don't move in lockstep with each other.

A worked example

Take a pattern instructing 200 stitches around a sweater body at a stated gauge of 5 stitches per inch. If your own swatch measures 4.5 stitches per inch instead, the calculator returns 180 stitches — the count that reproduces the pattern's intended 40-inch finished circumference at your looser gauge, rather than the pattern's literal 200, which would come out wider than the designer intended. A separate row-count example: a pattern calling for 84 rows to a sleeve's underarm at 7 rows per inch, converted to a gauge of 6.25 rows per inch, becomes 75 rows — again reproducing the pattern's intended 12-inch sleeve length rather than its literal row count.

Two other things it converts

Beyond rescaling an existing pattern count, the tool also runs the gauge math in the other direction: give it a target width or length in inches plus your gauge, and it returns the stitch or row count needed to reach it directly — useful when you're not adapting a published pattern at all, just building your own dimensions from scratch. What this tool does not do

It rescales counts, not shaping. A raglan decrease sequence, a set-in sleeve cap, or heel-turn short rows involve more than a straight stitch-count ratio — the shaping itself may need to be recalculated at your new stitch counts, not just scaled proportionally. When to reach for this instead of just changing needle size

If your gauge is close to the pattern's — within about half a stitch per inch — sizing up or down a needle and re-swatching to match exactly is usually simpler than converting every count in a pattern. This calculator earns its keep when re-swatching to match isn't realistic (you've already got significant length worked, or your gauge is stable but genuinely different from the pattern's for reasons swatching a different needle size won't fix, like a yarn that's simply spun differently than the pattern's).

FAQ

Do I need to convert every single number in a pattern? Only the ones that determine finished size — cast-on/foundation counts, stitch counts at key shaping points, and row counts used for length. An instruction that tells you to keep going until a piece reaches a stated inch measurement is already gauge-independent by design, so there's nothing to convert there at all.

What if my stitch gauge matches but my row gauge doesn't? Convert only the row-based counts and leave stitch-based counts alone — the two are handled as separate ratios in this tool specifically because they commonly diverge independently of each other.
