How to Steeking (Knitting)

Steeking means deliberately cutting knit fabric open with scissors — a genuinely alarming first step for most knitters to trust, since it runs directly against the instinct that cut knitting unravels. It works because of a real structural fact about knit fabric, and it lets a piece be worked as a faster, simpler closed tube (no fiddly back-and-forth colorwork rows, no steeks-free armhole shaping mid-round) and then opened up afterward exactly where openings are needed — a cardigan front, an armhole, a neckline.

Why cutting knit fabric doesn't unravel it

A knit stitch is a series of interlocked loops running in columns — cut a single column of stitches, and the loops on either side of the cut are still held by the columns next to them, not freed to run. This is genuinely true of stockinette specifically; it's the reason steeking works at all, and also why steeking a very open or unstable stitch pattern is riskier than steeking a firm, tightly worked stockinette panel.

The reinforcement step, before any cutting happens

A steek is deliberately worked as a few extra stitches beyond the piece's actual pattern — a narrow column, often 5-8 stitches wide, worked in the round exactly where a later cut needs to happen. Before cutting, those extra stitches are reinforced, most commonly by machine-stitching two lines down either side of the intended cut line, or by hand-crocheting a line of slip stitches along each side. This reinforcement is what actually prevents any drift or loosening at the cut edge — cutting unreinforced knitting, even stockinette, is a real risk most steeking instructions explicitly warn against.

The cut itself

Once both reinforcement lines are secure, the cut is made directly between them, straight down the center of the steek column, using sharp scissors and a steady, continuous motion rather than many small snips (which risk nicking a stitch outside the intended column). Where it's used

Which fibres actually steek well

Wool, especially a slightly hairy, non-superwash wool, steeks best — the individual fibres grip and felt slightly against each other, adding real structural security beyond the reinforcement stitching alone. Superwash wool, cotton, and especially slippery synthetic fibres steek far less reliably, since they lack that fibre-to-fibre grip; steeking these fibres, if attempted at all, needs more thorough reinforcement and is generally considered riskier by experienced steekers.

Where it goes wrong

A cut edge that frays or loosens despite reinforcement. Usually traces to reinforcement stitching that wasn't sewn close enough to the actual cut line, or to a slippery fibre — superwash or synthetic — that never had much natural grip to lose in the first place. Check both the stitching's placement and whether the yarn itself was ever a good steeking candidate before writing the whole method off.

Cutting into the wrong column, damaging the actual garment fabric. This is the single most feared and most avoidable steeking mistake — counting stitches carefully and marking the exact center of the steek column (with a contrasting thread or pins) before cutting removes the guesswork that leads to this.
